Copper is a chemical element with the symbol Cu and atomic number 29. Its name derives from the Latin "cuprum". It is a soft, malleable and ductile metal with a very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Copper is used, in fact, as a conductor of heat and electricity, as a building material and as a constituent of various metal alloys, such as sterling silver used in jewelry, and cupronickel, used to manufacture marine hardware and coins. It is one of the few metals that can be found in nature in a directly usable metallic form, the so-called native metals. In Roman times, copper was mainly mined in Cyprus, origin of the name of the metal, from aes сyprium (metal of Cyprus), then transformed into сuprum (Latin).
