Citrine is a yellow-orange variety of quartz. The name derives from the Latin "citrus" "cedar" (the ripe fruit of the cedar is yellow-orange). The cause of the color is still under discussion, some believe it is due to the presence of trivalent iron impurities in the crystal lattice of the mineral. Natural citrine is very rare, therefore most of the one for sale is obtained by heating amethyst quartz. In fact, when heated to more than 300-400 ° C, the amethyst loses its purple color and becomes yellow, orange or brown and takes on the appearance of citrine.
