Fossil wood is the remains of a plant that lived millions of years ago. It is often believed that fossils are only the remains of animals, while in fact they can also be derived from plants or other things. In order to fossilize, and therefore not undergo decomposition, trees must be in an environment without oxygen, for example covered by volcanic ash or other types of sediments. Over time, water, penetrating inside these sediments, causes minerals such as iron, manganese, copper to be deposited on the walls of the plants, which complete the fossilization process.
