Larimar is a rare blue variety of pectolite found only in the Dominican Republic, in the Caribbean. Its color varies from white, light blue, green-blue to deep blue. The first documented encounter with this mineral is that of Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren of the parish of Barahona, in the Dominican Republic, who asked in 1916 for permission to explore and exploit the mine of a certain blue rock that he had discovered. Pectolites were not yet known in the Dominican Republic and the request was denied. Larimar has a unique volcanic blue coloration which is the result of copper being replaced by calcium
