The name celestine derives from the Latin word caelestis, meaning celestial, which in turn derives from caelum, sky.
Celestine, or celestite, is a mineral consisting of strontium sulfate (SrSO4). The mineral is named for its delicate blue color. Along with strontianite, celestine is the principal source of the element strontium, commonly used in fireworks and various metal alloys. In fact, its powder emits a bright red glow when burned. It is also used in glass, ceramics, paint, and rubber, and in jewelry.
It is found in various parts of the world, usually in small quantities. Pale blue crystal specimens are found in Madagascar. White and orange variants have been found in Bristol, UK, where celestine was mined commercially until the mid-20th century.
