Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, therefore belonging to the family of cryptocrystalline quartz. Its best known and most valuable color is the red-orange one, due to the presence of iron oxides inside. Its name is probably linked to that of the dogwood, a plant that produces fruits with colors similar to those of the mineral. In addition, the alchemists of the Middle Ages used it to activate the energy of other varieties of chalcedony by heating it up to very high temperatures.
