Citrine is a variety of yellow-orange quartz. The name comes from the Latin “citrus” “cedar” (the ripe fruit of the citron is yellow-orange). The cause of the color is still under discussion, some believe it is due to the presence of trivalent iron impurities in the crystal lattice of the mineral. Natural citrine quartz is very rare, therefore most of that on sale is obtained by heating amethyst quartz. In fact, if heated to more than 300-400 °C, amethyst loses its purple color and becomes yellow, orange or brown and takes on the appearance of citrine quartz.
