Hematite is an iron oxide belonging to the homonymous group. The name derives from the Greek, "aematites lithos" "blood stone" which refers to the vivid red color of the powder. Hematite is quite variable in its appearance and can take on different colors but its powder will always be blood red. Among the various forms it can take, it is worth mentioning the rosette shape and the coarse, lamellar, radiated aggregates with a smooth surface, defined as mammellonar hematite.
