Pyrite is a mineral composed of iron disulfide. The name derives from the Latin "pyrites", which, in turn, derives from the Greek "pyr", "fire". In fact, if you hit the pyrite with a piece of metal, it generates sparks. For this characteristic it was used as a flint. The copper-yellow metallic color of the pyrite in many cases has led to mistake it for gold, hence the common nickname of "fool's gold". Pyrite is easily distinguished from gold because it is much lighter, but it is harder and cannot be scratched with a fingernail or a knife.
