Malachite is a secondary copper mineral. Its typical color is green. Its name was given by Pliny the Elder and derives from the Greek μαλαχή, "mallow", with reference to the green color of mallow leaves. It is usually found as aggregates or encrustations. It can also be found as mammillary aggregates. Single crystals or groups of crystals are rare, but when they are found they are typically acicular or prismatic. It is also often found together with azurite crystals, which are generally more tabular in shape.
