Barite is a barium sulfide belonging to the celestine group. The name was given in 1800 by Dietrich Ludwig Gustav Karsten and derives from the Greek “barùs” “heavy” because barite has a high weight despite not being a metallic mineral. It comes in different colors, ranging from transparent to white to yellow and brown. It is the main mineral from which barium is extracted.
