Silicon (from the Latin silex, silicis which means flint) was identified for the first time by Antoine Lavoisier in 1787 and is the chemical element of the periodic table of the elements which has the symbol Si and atomic number 14. It is a semimetal and a semiconductor and it is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust after oxygen, making up as much as 27.7% of its weight. It is found in clay, feldspar, granite and quartz, mainly in the form of silicon dioxide, silicates and aluminosilicates. In its crystalline form, silicon has a gray color and a metallic luster, although its color can vary. Since silicon is the main semiconductor element used in the electronics industry, the Silicon Valley region of California, known for its numerous computer and electronics companies, is named after this element (silicon in English).
