Calcite is composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and is one of the most common minerals in the world. Its color, when pure, ranges from transparent to whitish, but in the presence of impurities it can also take on other colors, such as blue, green, red, yellow and orange. Its typical origin is sedimentary, both by chemical precipitation from supersaturated calcium carbonate solutions and by sedimentation of organic remains that use calcium carbonate to form their shell. In addition to a sedimentary origin, calcite can also be found in both magmatic and metamorphic rocks. Calcite is the mineral with the most shapes known: in fact, more than 2000 different combinations of crystalline habits are known.
