Hematite is an iron oxide belonging to the group of the same name. The name comes from the Greek, "aematites lithos" "blood stone" which refers to the vivid red color of the powder. Hematite is quite variable in its appearance and can take on different colors but its powder will always be blood red. Among the various shapes it can take, it is worth mentioning the rosette shape and the coarse, lamellar, radial aggregates, with a smooth surface, defined as mammillary hematite.
