Bismuth is the chemical element with atomic number 83 and its symbol is Bi. It is a heavy, brittle metal with a white color with pinkish, yellowish and bluish iridescences. It is the heaviest of the so-called "heavy metals" and is the only one of them that is not toxic. Together with gallium and antimony it is one of the only three elements that, like water, in the liquid state has a smaller volume than in the solid state. If heated it can ignite and burn with a blue flame, producing yellow fumes of bismuth oxide. The origin of the name is not clear, it derives from a German word, Wismut, whose meaning is uncertain. In the past, due to the similarity, it was confused with tin and lead. It was Claude Geoffroy Junine in 1753 who proved that it was an element in itself. This Bismuth sample was obtained by melting bismuth and making it recrystallize and is, therefore, an artificial sample.
